FATIME BY REZA ABBASI
DOCUMENTARY—2021

review link per request
Description: In Berlin Grunewald, director Reza Abbasi’s family lives in refugee shelter. As the night unfolds during the sacred month of Ramadan, we witness the Abbasi family navigating preparations under the ever-present gaze of the camera. In a departure from the typical handheld approach, the artificial smoothness of a gimbal creates a artificially staged atmosphere, blurring the lines between documentary and orchestrated moments.
The film centers around Fatime, the head of the Abbasi family, as she leads her family through the rituals of Ramadan. Reza's father, brother, and sister join in the collaborative effort to prepare iftar, the evening meal that marks the end of each day's fasting. Leading to Reza’s brother bringing portions of the meal to different inhabitants of the shelter outside of the family’s home, the film follows the quiet beauty found in the midst of a community bound by both circumstance and cultural celebration."
